Founded on December 31, 1974, the State Chamber Choir “Polifonija” is one of Lithuania’s most renowned professional choirs. Emerging from an Early Lithuanian Music Ensemble established by conductor Sigitas Vaičiulionis, the choir introduced Lithuania to Renaissance and Baroque compositions, a pioneering endeavor at the time. The ensemble’s inaugural New Year’s concert laid the foundation for an annual tradition cherished to this day.
Initially supported by the Šiauliai Pedagogical Institute and later the Šiauliai Higher Music School, the choir was officially named “Polifonija” in 1979 and recognized as a Folk Collective. It achieved professional status in 1986, becoming part of the Lithuanian State Philharmonic as a mixed chamber choir. In 1998, it gained independence as a standalone concert organization.
Over the decades, “Polifonija” has been led by a series of esteemed directors and conductors, including Gediminas Ramanauskas, Tomas Ambrozaitis, Egidijus Kaveckas, and Linas Balandis. Under their leadership, the choir has flourished artistically, performing a vast repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary works.
Key milestones in the choir’s history include its 30th and 45th anniversary celebrations and numerous accolades. Recent achievements highlight its excellence on the international stage:
2021: First place at the International Orthodox Sacred Music Competition “Hajnówka.”
2023: Grand Prix for sacred music and first place in academic music at the “Golden Voices of Montserrat” competition in Spain.
2024: Awarded the prestigious title “PRIMUS INTER PARES” at the International Orthodox Church Music Festival-Competition “Hajnówka” and the Polish Minister of Culture’s prize.
With a legacy rooted in tradition and innovation, “Polifonija” continues to captivate audiences worldwide, exemplifying Lithuania’s rich choral heritage.
