Call for young composers

Who can apply?
Composers under 35 (born in or after 1981), or composers who have recently (after 1 July 2013) received a degree in composition at a music academy or conservatory. Motivated exceptions to the age limit will be taken into consideration. The workshop is not restricted to European citizens, but non-European applicants should show a clear and sustainable connection to European music life.
How to apply?
The application consists of filling in an online form and uploading several documents:
- The online form has to be filled in in one session. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a way to edit previously submitted applications. You can preview the questions here.
- The documents include scores, a motivational letter and (optional) references. See details below.
What to submit?
• Maximally two scores in PDF format, and (if possible) recordings of the works in MP3 or AAC.
• Instead of uploading recordings, you can choose to add links to Soundcloud, Youtube, etc. in the online form.
• One score should be a work for multiple voices.
• The other score should be a work using electronics.
• The title of all PDF files (scores, form, letters) and all music files should start with the (family) name of the composer.
(example: yourlastname_titleof thepiece.pdf).
• The maximum size of PDFs is 2 MB, of sound files 5 MB; larger files will not be accepted.
• References from teachers or performers are welcome but not obligatory. Only PDFs will be accepted.
• Fill out the online application form (via this form, you can upload your scores and if applicable additional documents).
• Applications that do not comply to these conditions will not be reviewed !
• The deadline is 25 February 2016, 18:00 hrs CET.
Selection
A jury will select three composers to be invited to Helsinki for sessions in April and August, resulting in a presentation concert during Tenso Days Helsinki. More information about the content of the workshop here.
The chosen composers will be asked to write some fragments to try out in the April sessions, at which two singers will be available. In the August sessions, they are expected to work on a completed piece.
Accommodation and travel
Hotel and travel to Helsinki (from an airport in Europe) will be arranged for the selected composers. In August, they will be invited to all activities organized in the framework of Tenso Days Helsinki.
